Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has dismissed claims that he endorsed Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during the 2023 general election, stating that he has never publicly supported any politician or political party.
Falz made the clarification during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday, where he explained that his political advocacy has always centred on encouraging Nigerians to participate in elections and demand a credible democratic process.
The rapper said he only urged citizens to vote according to their convictions and did not campaign for any candidate.
“Just a point of correction: I’ve never, in 2023 or at any point, openly supported any politician or political party. I’ve only actively encouraged people to go out to vote and let their intentions be known. What I clamour for is a free and fair democratic process,” he said.
Falz explained that his decision to avoid endorsing politicians was influenced by his concerns about Nigeria’s political system, which he said has continued to recycle the same set of leaders.
He noted that while he remains open to supporting a candidate in the future, such a decision would only come after gaining full confidence in the individual’s ability to deliver.
“If I see someone that I feel 100 per cent is the one, maybe I would. But as it stands, I’m just trying to be cautious,” he added.
The hip hop act also called on Nigerians, especially young voters, to participate actively in the 2027 general elections, stressing that a high voter turnout could strengthen the electoral process.
Falz has over the years been vocal on issues of governance, accountability, and civic responsibility, using his music and public appearances to encourage greater participation in Nigeria’s democracy.
