The Lagos State Government has strengthened its project monitoring and legislative oversight framework to improve infrastructure delivery, accelerate budget implementation, and enhance accountability in the execution of public projects.
Speaking at the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget’s 2026 Monitoring and Evaluation Stakeholders’ Forum, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, said the new monitoring system tracks projects from the planning stage through execution and completion to ensure they are delivered on schedule.
George explained that the framework enables the government to identify implementation challenges early, reducing delays and ensuring efficient use of public funds. He noted that the budgeting process begins with consultations involving residents across the state, allowing citizens’ priorities to shape the annual budget.
According to the commissioner, monitoring teams conduct regular inspections of project sites in collaboration with relevant ministries and agencies to verify completed work, assess progress against approved timelines, and confirm that contractors meet agreed performance milestones before payments are approved.
He said accountability remains a key pillar of the state’s infrastructure agenda, stressing that all government-funded projects, regardless of size or location, are subject to continuous monitoring.
George identified the Lagos Rail Mass Transit, Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge, Lagos Food Logistics Hub, and Massey Children’s Hospital as some of the state’s flagship projects. He added that investments in schools, healthcare facilities, and community infrastructure remain equally important because of their direct impact on residents.
The commissioner also announced the introduction of the Lagos State Development Plan (LSDP) 2052 Tracking Dashboard, a digital platform designed to provide real-time data for monitoring project implementation, evaluating institutional performance, and improving policy execution.
Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Lukman Sa’ad Olumoh, said legislative oversight has become a vital mechanism for ensuring projects are completed efficiently and within approved budgetary provisions.
Olumoh noted that lawmakers regularly review implementation reports, engage relevant government agencies, and monitor project execution to ensure public programmes achieve their intended objectives.
He added that the use of digital technology has improved transparency, efficiency, and accountability in project monitoring.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, said public participation remains central to the state’s planning process.
She explained that budget consultations give residents an opportunity to influence government priorities, while field inspections carried out before contractor payments help guarantee quality, transparency, and timely project completion.
Lagos State Government said the strengthened monitoring framework is expected to improve service delivery, reinforce fiscal discipline, and support the successful implementation of critical infrastructure projects across the state.
