The Federal Government has urged Nigerians to remain calm and adhere to preventive health measures following the confirmation of an Ebola disease case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The government, in a press statement issued by the Ministry of Health, said it was working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and other relevant health authorities to protect public health and strengthen disease surveillance.
It stressed that there was no need for panic, urging members of the public to rely on verified information, maintain proper hand hygiene and seek guidance from health authorities if they suspect exposure to the virus.
The ministry explained that Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person who is sick or has died, as well as contact with contaminated materials.
It added that the virus does not spread before symptoms begin.
The government also encouraged Nigerians to familiarise themselves with the symptoms of Ebola and promptly report suspected cases to the appropriate health authorities.
For reliable information and to report suspected cases, members of the public were advised to call the NCDC toll-free line on 6232, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The ministry reaffirmed the importance of public cooperation, accurate information and adherence to preventive measures in protecting communities and safeguarding public health.
It urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, avoid spreading unverified information and work together with health authorities to prevent the further spread of the disease.
