The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of a 47-year-old technician, Idris Clement, who was shot dead during a robbery attack in Akure, the state capital.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a four-man gang of suspected armed robbers reportedly invaded the Shagari area, attacking residents and stealing valuables before storming Clement’s residence.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the suspect is currently in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), where he is assisting with ongoing investigations.
“We have arrested a suspect in connection with the violent attack on residents of the Shagari area and the killing of the technician. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the robbery gang still at large,” Jimoh said.
He assured residents that the command would ensure all those involved in the attack are arrested and prosecuted.
Narrating the incident, the deceased’s son, AbdulFatai Clement, said the robbers had attacked two houses before invading their family compound at about 1 a.m.
He said his father confronted one of the attackers in an attempt to protect the family but was overpowered after other gang members joined the assault.
“They attacked him with axes and cutlasses before one of them brought out a gun and shot him. We rushed him to the hospital, but he had lost so much blood. The doctors later confirmed him dead,” he said.
The victim’s widow, Taibat Clement, appealed to the Ondo State Government and security agencies to ensure those responsible for the killing are brought to justice.
Police said investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to track down the remaining suspects.
