The Department of State Services (DSS) has released a Kaduna farmer, Nura Idris, after an internal investigation cleared him of allegations linking him to Boko Haram, bringing an end to his detention that began in June 2024.

The Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, approved Idris’ immediate release after a review panel found no evidence to support claims that he collaborated with the terrorist group.

As part of efforts to facilitate his reintegration, the DSS presented Idris with ₦3 million in compensation and pledged additional support to help him rebuild his farming and livestock business.

According to security sources, Idris, a farmer and herder from Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was initially arrested by another security agency in Suleja, Niger State, before being transferred to DSS custody.

Speaking after regaining his freedom, Idris expressed appreciation to the DSS, describing the compensation as timely support that would enable him to restart his life. He also said he was treated humanely while in the agency’s custody.

His father, Yusuf Idris, thanked the DSS leadership for the gesture and said the family would ensure the funds were put to good use.

The agency said the release followed an ongoing review of inherited and prolonged detention cases aimed at identifying individuals who were wrongly held.

Officials added that affected persons are also provided with medical, psychological and financial support to aid their return to normal life.

The DSS noted that the exercise has resulted in the review of more than 30 cases, with over ₦300 million paid in compensation to individuals found to have been wrongfully detained.
The agency said the initiative reflects its commitment to upholding national security while protecting the rights and dignity of innocent citizens.
