The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed Sen. Godswill Akpabio’s claim that the party is “dead,” insisting it remains strong and is undergoing a rebuilding process ahead of future elections.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mohammed Jungudo, described Akpabio’s comments as political wishful thinking, maintaining that recent electoral victories and growing support across the country demonstrate the PDP’s continued relevance.
Akpabio had made the remarks during the commissioning of a road project in Abuja’s Gaduwa District, where he questioned the party’s existence and suggested it should be allowed to die.
Reacting, Jungudo said the PDP has weathered political challenges over its 27-year history and is once again positioning itself for electoral success.
He cited what the party described as key indicators of its resurgence, including recent victories in the Adamawa State local government elections and the Rivers State Senate by-election, the support of prominent political figures such as Iyabo Obasanjo and former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, as well as the influx of political stakeholders from several states into the party.
The PDP also argued that the project where Akpabio made the remarks was executed under the supervision of a member of the party currently serving in the APC-led administration, describing it as evidence of the competence of leaders produced by the PDP.
The opposition party expressed confidence that its ongoing internal reforms and expanding support base would strengthen its chances in future elections, saying Nigerians would again entrust it with the responsibility of leading the country.
