President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the alleged fabrication and circulation of a false anti-North statement attributed to him on social media.
In a petition dated Wednesday and signed by his Chief of Staff, Chinedu Akubueze (Esq.), Akpabio described the viral Facebook graphic as false, inflammatory and dangerously divisive, urging security agencies to uncover those behind its creation and distribution.
The viral post falsely quoted the Senate President as saying: “Northerners, you will be the ones to suffer the most if you allow Tinubu to lose the election.”
Akpabio’s office firmly denied he ever made the statement, insisting there is no speech, interview, video, audio recording, official statement or credible news report to support the claim.
The petition alleged the graphic was deliberately designed to mislead the public, incite regional tensions, and portray the Senate President as making threats against Northern Nigerians.
It also identified three Facebook users Abdullai Musa, Uzoma Chilaka, and Engineer Ibrahim Umar Ammar as among the earliest known accounts to have shared the post, urging the DSS to investigate them as persons of interest who may have information about the origin and spread of the fabricated content.
Akpabio stressed that the individuals should not be presumed guilty but said a thorough investigation into the source of the graphic, related communications, and any coordinated network behind its dissemination is necessary.
