Popular Nigerian singer and Critic, Charles Oputa, musically known as Charly Boy, described his 48-year marriage as “very boring,” saying long-term relationships inevitably become repetitive but require commitment, patience and deliberate effort to endure.
Speaking during an interview, Charly Boy said no marriage is free from challenges, stressing that successful unions are built on effective management rather than perfection.
“All marriages are management, including my own,” he said.
The entertainer also revealed that he and his wife deliberately keep their marital disagreements private, arguing that involving third parties rarely helps resolve conflicts at home
“Me and my wife, we don’t talk to Nigerians about our quarrels. They won’t fix the quarrel,” he said.
Reflecting on nearly five decades of marriage, Charly Boy admitted that staying with one partner for such a long time can become monotonous.
“I have been married to one woman for 48 years. It is very boring.
Imagine eating the same egusi for years; it’s boring now,” he said, using the analogy to illustrate the familiarity that can develop in long-term relationships.
Despite acknowledging the monotony that may arise, he said many couples choose stability over the uncertainty of pursuing new relationships.
“The devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know,” he added.
Charly Boy also cautioned against infidelity, saying cheating destroys trust and can destabilise relationships.
However, he remarked that he supports the idea of “outsourcing,” a controversial comment that has sparked debate on social media.
