The Kano State Government has distributed working tools to 1,900 butchers across the state’s 44 local government areas as part of efforts to strengthen small businesses and improve food safety.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony at the Government House on Thursday, Governor Abba Yusuf said the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to economic empowerment, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.
He described butchers as critical stakeholders in the food supply chain and stressed the need for strict hygiene standards in abattoirs and meat processing centres to safeguard public health.
“The initiative is part of our administration’s broader agenda to strengthen small businesses, reduce poverty, improve food safety, and drive sustainable economic growth across Kano State,” the governor said.
Yusuf warned that poor sanitary practices could expose consumers to preventable food-borne diseases, urging beneficiaries to maintain high standards of cleanliness while using the support to expand their businesses, boost productivity, create employment, and improve their livelihoods.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering artisans and trade associations through policies and programmes designed to promote entrepreneurship and economic self-reliance.
Chairman of the Kano State Butchers Association, Alhaji Nasiru Isyaku, commended the state government for the intervention, describing it as unprecedented. He said the support would improve the welfare of butchers and enhance professionalism in the industry.
Isyaku also pledged that members of the association would continue to uphold hygienic practices and professional standards in their operations.
