The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has commenced an investigation following the circulation of a viral video showing a police officer allegedly drinking alcohol while conducting a stop-and-search operation.
The footage, which has attracted widespread attention on social media, shows an armed officer holding what appears to be a bottle of Hennessy while interacting with occupants of a stationary vehicle. The officer is also heard calling out figures as one of the vehicle’s occupants appears to be carrying out a financial transaction on a mobile device.
The incident has sparked public concern, particularly as the Nigeria Police Act 2021 prohibits officers from consuming alcohol or other intoxicating substances while on duty.
Section 100(1) of the Act states that a police officer shall not take any intoxicating liquor, psychotropic substance, or stimulant while on duty, and any violation is subject to disciplinary procedures.
Reacting to the video, the Force Public Relations Department, through its New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, said the police leadership is aware of the incident and has launched efforts to identify the officer involved.
According to Giwa, authorities are working to establish the identity of the officer, determine the location of the incident, and verify the circumstances surrounding the encounter.
He assured members of the public that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
The police have not yet disclosed the officer’s identity or where the incident occurred as inquiries continue.
