The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has thwarted an attempt to smuggle tramadol to the United Kingdom after operatives intercepted a shipment of the opioid concealed inside black soap containers in Lagos.
The seizure was disclosed on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, in a narco-trend update shared on his official X account.
According to Babafemi, the illicit consignment was uncovered during a routine interdiction operation, preventing the drugs from being exported to the UK.
The NDLEA spokesman said the discovery highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by drug traffickers to evade security checks.
He also renewed the agency’s warning to Nigerians against accepting parcels or luggage from others without verifying their contents.
“It’s difficult not to continue to warn people that they should avoid accepting any parcel or luggage from anyone,” Babafemi said.
Explaining the latest seizure, he added: “Here are pills of tramadol buried in black soap containers to get them to the UK, but the concealment was discovered by NDLEA officers in Lagos.”
NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and prevent illicit substances from being smuggled through Nigeria’s borders.
