The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Taofeek Adegoke, has attracted mixed reactions after a video of him distributing boiled corn to supporters during a campaign outing went viral on social media.

In the widely circulated video, Adegoke is seen standing beside a pot of boiled corn and personally handing it out to supporters who gathered around him. The crowd, chanting “Mr Governor,” reached out to receive the corn directly from the candidate, with some describing the gesture as a blessing.

The incident has sparked debate online, with supporters applauding Adegoke for what they described as his humility, simplicity and accessibility.

Others, however, dismissed the act as a familiar political campaign tactic aimed at winning public sympathy ahead of the election.

Acts of public engagement have become a recurring feature of election campaigns in Nigeria, with candidates often visiting local markets, eating at roadside food stalls, using commercial transport and participating in community activities to project themselves as being close to ordinary citizens.

Social media users expressed differing opinions over the video. While some praised the ADC flagbearer for connecting with the people, others argued that such gestures are largely symbolic and typical of campaign periods.

Despite the criticism, some commenters maintained that Adegoke’s action reflected his personality and commitment to engaging directly with residents.
