The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the personal particulars and credentials of presidential candidates for the 2027 general election, with President Bola Tinubu’s nomination form showing blank spaces for his primary and secondary school qualifications.
The documents, released on Saturday in line with the commission’s revised timetable for the 2027 elections, form part of the nomination papers submitted by presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
A review of Tinubu’s EC9 nomination form shows that the President listed only his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University, United States, obtained in 1979, under the educational qualifications section. The spaces provided for his primary and secondary school qualifications on the summary page of the form were left unfilled.
However, Tinubu attached copies of his university degree certificate and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate as supporting documents.
The President, who stated that he was born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos, described his occupation as “Politician.” He also listed his employment history, indicating that he worked with Mobil Nigeria Limited between 1983 and 1992, served as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, and has been employed by the Federal Government since assuming office as President in 2023. He declared that he had never been dismissed from public service.
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, on the other hand, provided details of his educational history from primary school through university.
According to his submission, Obi attended St. Augustine’s Primary School, Anambra, where he completed his primary education in 1973, before proceeding to Christ the King College, Onitsha, where he obtained the West African School Certificate in 1978. He also listed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, earned in 1984, and attached his NYSC certificate.
Obi, who described himself as a “Public Servant,” left the section for previous working experience blank. He also declared that he had never been dismissed from public service.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar listed his First School Leaving Certificate, West African School Certificate and a Master’s degree in International Relations obtained in 2020 among his academic qualifications.
Atiku, who described his occupation as “Businessman,” stated that he served in the Nigerian Customs Service from 1969 to 1989 before voluntarily retiring. He also listed his tenure at the Presidential Villa as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and declared that he had never been dismissed from public service.
INEC said the publication of the nomination forms marks the commencement of the statutory period for public scrutiny of candidates’ personal particulars and supporting documents.
Under Section 33 of the Electoral Act, any person who believes that information contained in a candidate’s affidavit or accompanying documents is false may institute legal proceedings to challenge the declaration.
The commission has scheduled the 2027 presidential election for January 16, while campaigns for presidential and National Assembly elections are expected to begin later this month in line with the electoral timetable.
