More than 500 people living with kidney-related illnesses reportedly gathered at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, on Wednesday, August 13, following an initiative aimed at supporting patients with dialysis expenses.
The gathering was organised following an appeal by Enugu based media personality and philanthropist, Mr Okoh Emmanuel Onyeka, popularly known as Okwuluora, after well meaning Nigerians reportedly contributed funds for distribution to kidney patients to assist with the cost of dialysis treatment.
The gathering included men, women and children, with some patients displaying visible signs associated with advanced kidney disease, including swollen legs and abdominal swelling.
Among those present was a 13-year-old boy from Akure, Ondo State, who was reportedly undergoing dialysis and had battled kidney disease for about five years. According to his mother, the family had sold properties and exhausted their resources in an effort to sustain his treatment.
Former Anambra State Governor and NDC Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also visited the patients during the gathering. He interacted with some of them and reportedly made a financial contribution towards their medical care.
The development has renewed concerns over the growing burden of kidney disease and the high cost of dialysis treatment, which places significant financial pressure on affected families.
Some medical practitioners have previously raised concerns about possible factors contributing to kidney disease, including inappropriate medication use and exposure to certain substances.
Claims have also been made concerning the processing of locally produced red palm oil, including allegations of the use of colouring agents.
However, such claims require proper scientific and regulatory verification before being established as causes of kidney disease.
The gathering has nonetheless drawn attention to the need for greater awareness, early detection, affordable treatment and sustained support for people living with kidney-related illnesses.
For many affected families, financial assistance for dialysis can make the difference between continuing treatment and being unable to afford life sustaining care.
