The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has directed 214 students in the LLB II class to return to their original departments after determining that they were not officially admitted into the Faculty of Law.

The decision was announced during a meeting held on Monday, August 4, 2026, involving the university management, Faculty of Law management, the affected students, and the leadership of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, UNICAL Chapter (LAWSAN-UCC).

According to the university, only 221 of the 435 students currently in the LLB II class were admitted into the Faculty of Law through the proper admission process.

The remaining 214 students reportedly gained entry into the faculty from other departments, a status the university said makes them ineligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School.

To implement the decision, the university has temporarily locked the portals of the affected students to facilitate their transfer back to their original departments.

Similarly,  the university announced two relief measures for the affected students. They will either receive a full refund of their 2025/2026 school fees or enjoy free tuition for the 2026/2027 academic session in their original departments, with the university covering the cost.

In a statement, LAWSAN-UCC said the update was issued to keep members of the faculty informed of the outcome of the meeting. The association acknowledged the emotional effect of the decision on the affected students and urged them to remain calm, supportive, and respectful while the process is being concluded.
