A reported altercation between a bride and her mother-in-law over food at a wedding reception has sparked widespread debate on social media after claims emerged that the marriage ended just two days after the ceremony.
The incident, which gained traction through a viral video, was reportedly first aired during a July 20 broadcast by Independent Television and Radio in Edo State.
According to the report, food had run out at the reception when some members of the groom’s family arrived late, leaving only the portion the bride had reserved for her parents.
The groom’s mother allegedly requested that the remaining food be shared with the late-arriving guests, but the bride declined.
The situation reportedly escalated when the mother-in-law attempted to serve the food herself.
Allegedly took the food back and returned it to the cooler, prompting the older woman to slap her. The bride was then said to have responded by slapping her mother-in-law.
The report further alleged that although the groom remained calm throughout the reception, he later decided to end the marriage two days after the wedding.
Legal practitioners have, however, clarified that a statutory marriage in Nigeria cannot ordinarily be dissolved after only two days.
Under the Matrimonial Causes Act, couples are generally required to be married for at least two years before filing for divorce, except in exceptional circumstances involving hardship or depravity. In some cases, an annulment may also be considered.
The incident has generated mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians divided over who was at fault.
While some users criticised both women for allowing the disagreement to turn physical, others defended the bride, arguing that she reacted after being assaulted.
Others blamed the groom for failing to manage the conflict and set boundaries between his wife and mother.
The story has continued to fuel discussions on family boundaries, wedding etiquette, anger management and the importance of conflict resolution in marriage.
