Gunfire erupted in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday after suspected hoodlums attacked the convoy of Governor Ademola Adeleke shortly after his visit to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.

The incident occurred after Adeleke left the palace, where he had met with the monarch following his receipt of the Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission after his re-election.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants arrived in an unregistered Sienna bus through the Ita Olokan area and opened fire around the palace. The attack reportedly lasted between 12 and 15 minutes, prompting security personnel attached to the governor to return fire.

The attackers reportedly fled the scene after the security operatives repelled them.

Panic erupted  among residents and traders in the area, with several business owners reportedly shutting their shops and fleeing to safety.

Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the attack, describing the assailants as hoodlums.

He said the governor’s security personnel successfully repelled the attackers and confirmed that no casualty was recorded.

As of 4:45 p.m., sporadic gunshots were reportedly still being heard around the area, according to the report.
